The Pranava Institute has been awarded an APNIC ISIF Asia grant for our project, ‘Unboxing Internet Infrastructures: The environmental costs of the Internet and what you can do about it!’
This project aims to unbox the complexity of the knowledge around internet infrastructures and energy consumption and make it accessible to young non- technical audiences with the aim to build knowledge and capacity, focussing on the APAC region.
The APNIC Foundation recently announced the recipients of their 2024 ISIF Asia grants, supporting 21 projects focused on enhancing internet access, inclusion, and environmental initiatives across the Asia Pacific region. We are honoured to be one among the five recipients of the Ian Peter grant for the Internet and the Environment.
Young internet users are often unaware of the environmental impact of the digital world. From data centre energy consumption to device manufacturing materials, the internet leaves a significant carbon footprint.
Our project aims to:
Empower young people: Develop an interactive multimedia toolkit that explains the complexities of internet infrastructure and energy consumption in an engaging, accessible way for young, non-technical audiences.
Partner with youth organisations: Collaborate with internet governance and infrastructure organisations across the Asia Pacific to integrate environmental awareness into digital education.
Build future leaders: Equip young people to become environmentally conscious architects of the internet and informed participants in internet governance within their local contexts.
This project builds upon our existing "Unboxing Tech Toolkit" initiative and serves as a crucial step towards a more sustainable digital future.
